My Letter to the CISCE Board
Note: This letter has been written in my personal capacity. The views do not represent my school or any entity related to me.
The Semester-1 exams were held in the MCQ format. The answer keys weren’t officially released, so there wasn’t any transparency maintained by the board. But, there were some questions in the History exam where multiple correct answers were possible, and some, where the whole existence of the questions seemed funny. I might be late to convey this information, but the following things could be done to rectify this huge error:
the re-evaluation phase is still on. Re-evaluation for Semester-1 could be accepted without any fee while accepting the mistake.
the Board can issue an apology to the Nation for making factual inaccuracies related to our Motherland, and to the students accepting that it’s due to the mistake of the CISCE that they lost marks, and that it can’t be brought back.
the Board can ignore this, and keep making similar mistakes in the future. (But I’m sure the Board wouldn’t do this.)
The following questions in the ISC History Exams were factually incorrect and harmed the interests of India:
1)
This question is factually wrong. Indian National Army was formed by the collective efforts of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Rash Bihari Bose, and Captain Mohan Singh. Every source has a different say on this topic. Heroes of Freedom Struggle, a quiz that was conducted by the MyGov initiative of the Government of India in the month of January’22 says it was Subhas Chandra Bose who founded the army. Several sources on the internet claim it was Rash Bihari Bose. The INA Saga, a book written by Ram Singh Rawal says it should be Captain Mohan Singh. This question should have been cancelled due to the absence of any primary evidence to support the answer.
2)
Multiple correct answers are possible here. Promising to adopt measures to stop the maltreatment of women is a ubiquitous promise in the political rallies. How is it possible to narrow it down to just one answer?
Since only one choice is possible here, here’s how even Rajiv Gandhi promised the same.
3)
This question is so wrong at all levels. If we do not choose option b, does it mean that he wasn’t a c) a man of integrity? If we choose c), does it mean that he wasn’t a capable administrator? Respected Sir, I ask you, how do we know what was really in the mind of Kamaraj, the leader of Syndicate? Did they make him the PM just because he was loyal to them? If yes, did they ignore his other positives? If we go by what the question setter wants us to believe, Kamaraj would have chosen any person who was loyal to him. I’m pretty sure option b) was just a cherry on the cake; not the primary reason. And even if it was, where has it been mentioned in the question to give a primary reason?
4)
Oh man, this has to be the biggest blunder of the examination. Each and every option is right. How were we supposed to find a “not a cause” here? Options a, b, and d are obviously right, but c? Oh boy, calling this option wrong means that you’re saying that Pakistani infiltrators didn’t enter Kashmir and here you’re going against what the Government of India believes in!
I’m sure you’ll look into this query because:
the council doesn’t prescribe any book(s). The board allows us to study from primary sources. In history, facts remain facts. If the questions from the book from which the questions were set are wrong, it doesn’t mean that the Council has to defend the book.
the questions harm the interests of our Nation.
factual inaccuracies and mistakes should be accepted. Accepting our mistakes is one of the basic principles of our Education System.
CISCE is considered to be the most rational education board in India. :)
Thank you,
